Mother of baby whose penis was cut off seeks help
Mar 13th 2017, 15:48, by Olusola Babarinsa

Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

Mrs Eudora Michael, 35, mother of nine-month-old Oyintari, whose penis was cut off during an ill-fated circumcision, has cried out for help.

Eudora, who spoke on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, said her baby had been going through excruciating pain since the incident took place in February 2017.

She said doctors had told her that for the baby to lead a normal life, he needed a corrective plastic surgery to reconstruct his urinary system to enable him to pass urine normally.

For her, the family’s major setback is money to carry out the surgery hence they have resorted to seeking help from the government and kind-hearted individuals to save the life of the boy.

Eudora lamented that she and her husband were indigent and could not afford the specialised care the baby needed to stay alive.

She said, "Since this sad incident occurred in February this year, we have been running all over the place to raise money. We have borrowed from many places and now we are in big debt. My husband has gone to the village to get help but people are not forthcoming.

"Those who have given us loans are not willing to give us more since we have yet to pay what we borrowed before.

"As I speak, we are even surviving at the mercy of doctors who are spending their own money when they see that we are unable to provide the drugs they prescribe. The baby is in serious pains and always crying. He cannot urinate and his bladder is swollen.

"I have to stand near the bed or bend down to breastfeed him so that the pipes connected into his genitals do not shift and go off.”

She appealed to the wife of Bayelsa State Governor, Dr Rachael Dickson, and kind-hearted Nigerians to assist the family financially with medical bills to save her baby, saying her jobless husband had no means to settle the exorbitant medical bills they had incurred so far.

The baby, according to medical sources at the FMC, lost a lot of blood, but had been stabilised and might be scheduled for corrective plastic surgery to reconstruct the urinary system to enable him to pass urine normally.

Eudora accused her step-father, Mr Ziworitin Keke, 59, of allegedly deliberately cutting off her nine-month-old baby's penis during circumcision.

It will be recalled that the incident occurred at Odenwari, a coastal community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa on February 5, 2017.

Eudora, a mother of eight children, four males and four females, noted that Oyintari was her first child to be circumcised by Keke.

She alleged that Keke cut off her child’s genitals out of “malice”.

She explained that the pain caused by the incident was too excruciating for a nine-month-old boy to bear.

She further alleged, "It is not a mistake at all as it’s being speculated. On that day, I was asleep and the man (Keke) sent a message that I should bring my baby for circumcision. Up till now, my husband is still angry with me because I didn't tell him before taking my baby to Keke.

"My husband and I had no immediate plan to circumcise our baby on that day because he had been sick since birth. I carried the baby to him and he cut off his genitals completely after checking the length.

"I was disturbed because the baby cried much more than other babies that had been circumcised without complications. When I checked the boy, I saw the deep cut but Keke told me that the penis had shrunk inside and would come out after treatment.

"I was not convinced. I knew there was danger and I took my baby to a health centre outside our community at Krokrosei after he told me to leave the baby with him for three weeks."

She alleged that her stepfather had earlier raped her 13-year-old girl and got her pregnant and the product of that act, a baby boy, is with her mother.

“But this time he wants my son to die,” she alleged.

According to her, the rape of her daughter was treated as a family matter and was not reported to the Police.

She, however, said the church where her step-father (Keke) functions as a clergyman suspended him for two years as a punishment because of the rape matter.

Meanwhile, the police authorities in Bayelsa on Monday confirmed the arrest of Keke.

The spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr Asinim Butswat , a deputy superintendent of Police, confirmed the development.
